In the late afternoon of March 27, 2026, the community of Huron, California, was shaken by an act of violence that claimed the life of 19-year-old Luis Leyva. A Hispanic male, Leyva was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds at the intersection of Crocker Avenue and Los Angeles Street. Despite the immediate medical aid provided by Fresno County Sheriff's deputies who responded to reports of shots fired around 4:45 p.m., his injuries proved fatal, and he died at the scene.
The
investigation into the homicide quickly pointed to a volatile dispute involving Leyva's ex-girlfriend, Sara Avila. Investigators identified two 18-year-old suspects: Joan Elias Pacheco, believed to be the shooter, and his best friend, Giovanni Cruz Hernandez, the alleged getaway driver. The motive for the deadly confrontation appears to be jealousy, as Pacheco was reportedly dating Avila at the time of the incident, just two weeks after she and Leyva had ended a three-year relationship.
On the day of the shooting, Hernandez had picked up Avila from her mother's house in his Toyota Corolla. Leyva spotted them and gave chase, leading to a traffic collision. In the aftermath, at the intersection, Avila witnessed the fatal encounter unfold from inside Hernandez's vehicle. According to her account, Pacheco emerged from behind a white Nissan Altima, and after a verbal exchange, he allegedly drew a weapon from his waistband and shot Leyva at point-blank range.
The Fresno County Sheriff's Office identified Pacheco and Hernandez as the primary suspects based on evidence gathered at the scene, which included seven 9mm casings, and from eyewitness testimonies. A search of one of the suspect's residences reportedly uncovered more ammunition of the same caliber. The investigation into Luis Leyva's death remains ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the events of that tragic day.
