In the early morning hours of Saturday, March 28, 2026, the life of 37-year-old Shameka Miller of Arlington, Texas, was cut short in a harrowing sequence of events that unfolded on a Beaumont highway. Miller, a traveling nurse, had been staying at the Baymont Inn on Interstate 10. At approximately 6:00 a.m., she placed a distressing call to Beaumont police, reporting that two men had solicited her for drugs in the motel parking lot and were now following her as she drove away.
The call, which was transferred to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office due to her movement, captured the terrifying moments that followed as dispatchers heard multiple gunshots over the open line.
Deputies were dispatched to Highway 73 east of Veolia around 6:30 a.m. following reports of a reckless driver. There, they discovered a black Dodge Charger that had crashed into the center median's cables. The vehicle was riddled with bullet holes, and inside, they found Shameka Miller unresponsive with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. Despite the efforts of emergency medical personnel, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Miller's death moved swiftly. Surveillance footage from the Baymont Inn showed two men, later identified as 25-year-old Javeon Javon Blount of Port Arthur and 28-year-old Demarcus Dewayne Elam of Humble, who were also staying at the motel. The footage captured them entering a gray Toyota Camry that matched the description and license plate number provided by Miller during her 911 call. This crucial piece of evidence, combined with other findings from the investigation, led to the issuance of murder warrants for both men.
Both Javeon Javon Blount and Demarcus Dewayne Elam were taken into custody. They have both been charged with murder in connection with Shameka Miller's death. Bond was set at $1.5 million for Blount and $2 million for Elam.
