In the early morning hours of Monday, March 30, 2026, a sense of routine was shattered on a street in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn. Forty-year-old Edwin Guevarez Jr., a Hispanic man, was near his home on Wortman Avenue when his life was abruptly ended. At approximately 9:10 a.m., the sound of gunfire echoed near Jerome Playground, and Guevarez was struck by bullets in his chest and right leg.
The brazen attack took place as the neighborhood was stirring, with people heading to work and children making their way to school.
First responders rushed to the scene to find Guevarez gravely wounded. He was quickly transported to One Brooklyn Health–Brookdale Hospital, but the medical staff's efforts to save him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead. Back on Wortman Avenue, police investigators began their work, marking shell casings on the pavement as they pieced together the morning's violent events. A growing memorial of candles marked the spot where a son, brother, and father had been slain.
The gunman, whose motive remains under investigation, fled the scene on foot before police arrived. Witnesses described the assailant as wearing a ski mask, a blue hooded sweatshirt, gray jeans, and multicolored Jordans. As of now, authorities have not made any arrests in connection with the shooting, and the suspect remains at large.
