In the early hours of March 15, 2026, a violent encounter in Apollo Beach, Florida, claimed the life of 19-year-old Jonathan Blue. The incident, which unfolded around 1:19 a.m., stemmed from what authorities have described as a planned narcotics transaction that turned deadly.
Deputies were initially called to a residence on White Chicory Drive after reports of a shooting.
While on their way, they discovered a vehicle in a ditch along 19th Avenue Northeast in the neighboring community of Ruskin. Inside the car, they found Jonathan Blue, the driver, and a female passenger, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Blue was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The female passenger was also hospitalized and was reported to be in stable condition.
The investigation into the shooting led detectives to identify 16-year-old James Middlebrooks as the primary suspect. According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, the shooting occurred during the drug deal at the Apollo Beach home. After being shot, Blue attempted to drive away but crashed his vehicle into the nearby ditch.
Middlebrooks was arrested and initially faced charges of being a minor in possession of a firearm and tampering with physical evidence. Following further investigation and consultation with the State Attorney's Office, the charges were upgraded. Middlebrooks now faces charges of first-degree premeditated murder, attempted first-degree premeditated murder, and two counts of shooting into a vehicle. The State Attorney's Office has confirmed that he will be tried as an adult.
