In the east Las Vegas Valley, a fatal encounter unfolded on March 1, 2026, leaving 27-year-old James Espinoza dead from a gunshot wound. The incident, which transpired near the intersection of Lake Mead and Nellis boulevards, was captured by a nearby vehicle's dash camera. The footage showed a man, later identified as Robert Aguilar Jr., 39, approaching Espinoza on a bicycle.
Following a brief interaction, both men drew firearms and an exchange of gunfire erupted.
According to a witness who was with Espinoza, whom he knew as "J," Aguilar approached them and demanded their belongings at gunpoint, saying, "Give me your s---, fool." The witness stated that Espinoza was openly carrying a firearm, which Aguilar attempted to steal. The confrontation quickly escalated, resulting in the deadly shootout. Multiple 911 calls brought Metropolitan Police Department officers to the scene where they found Espinoza on the sidewalk. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His sister later shared that he was a father and had just left a store moments before the fatal altercation.
Aguilar fled the scene on his bicycle, and was found a short distance away, yelling in pain. He had also sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition. Aguilar did not have a gun on him when he was found and initially told police he had been mugged. Surveillance footage from a nearby fast-food restaurant showed Aguilar slumped over his bicycle as he fled.
Robert Aguilar Jr. was subsequently arrested and faces charges of open murder and attempted robbery. He was held without bail and was still hospitalized during his initial court hearing on March 4. The community has since rallied to support Espinoza's family through an online fundraiser, remembering him as a loyal and loving individual whose presence made others feel safe.
