In the small community of Fredonia, Kansas, the life of 37-year-old Lucas Pickell was tragically cut short on the evening of Sunday, March 8, 2026. The events of that night unfolded in the even smaller, unincorporated area of Coyville, in the northwestern part of Wilson County, painting a grim picture of his final moments.
Just after 7:00 PM, the sound of gunfire pierced the quiet of the 2100 block of 2nd Street in Coyville, prompting a call to the Wilson County Sheriff's Office. When deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered Lucas Pickell's body just outside of a fifth-wheel RV. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. The subsequent investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Wilson County Sheriff's Office began to unravel the circumstances that led to the deadly encounter.
Preliminary information released by the KBI indicated that Pickell had been inside the RV with three other individuals. It is believed that during this time, they were using drugs. An altercation occurred, and it is alleged that one of the individuals, 52-year-old William “Bud” Wescott of Coyville, shot Pickell. Wescott was arrested at the scene and subsequently booked into the Wilson County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder.
The investigation also led to a brief but urgent search for a witness to the shooting. The KBI issued an endangered persons advisory for a 17-year-old girl who was present at the time of the incident. Fortunately, the teenager was located and confirmed to be safe shortly after the advisory was issued. As the legal process begins for Wescott, the community of Fredonia is left to mourn the loss of Lucas Pickell, a life ended in a moment of violence.
