On a late Friday afternoon in San Francisco, the routine calm of the Fillmore District was shattered by gunfire. Near the intersection of Golden Gate Avenue and Laguna Street, just steps from a public playground, a dispute between teenagers escalated into a triple shooting on January 30, 2026. When the chaos subsided, three juveniles had been struck by bullets. One of them, 15-year-old Jayda Pearl Mabrey, sustained life-threatening injuries.
First responders rushed all three victims to a nearby hospital, but despite the efforts of medical staff, Jayda succumbed to her injuries. The other two teens were expected to survive.
Jayda was a 10th-grade student at Gateway High School, where she was a cherished member of the school community. Remembered by her stepmother as a "wonderful kid," Jayda was one of six children and was known for her love of dancing, running track, and making TikTok videos. Her family believes she was an innocent bystander, caught in the crossfire of a conflict she had no part in. Tragically, her younger sister witnessed the shooting and held Jayda until help arrived. In the days that followed, a memorial of pink flowers, balloons, and candles grew outside her SoMa apartment building as the community gathered for vigils to mourn the profound loss of a young life described as one that "chose love over silence."
The San Francisco Police Department's Homicide Detail immediately launched an investigation into the shooting. Mayor Daniel Lurie announced that the department was pursuing "strong leads" in what appeared to be an isolated incident. The investigation progressed quickly, and on February 2, 2026, police arrested two suspects, a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old. The two teenagers were booked into the Juvenile Justice Center and have since been charged with murder and attempted murder.
