On the last day of 2025, the life of 32-year-old Justin Garrett Jiminez was tragically cut short in Redmond, Oregon. In the early morning hours of December 31st, law enforcement responded to reports of a gunshot and discovered Jiminez's body near homeless camps in the area of Northeast Greenwood and Northeast 17th streets. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound, and a firearm was recovered at the scene.
The investigation quickly led authorities to identify a person of interest: 51-year-old Don Henry Vandenberg, Jr., a white male also known by the nickname "Tank". The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office released a detailed description of Vandenberg, noting he was 5'7", about 160 pounds, bald with facial hair, and had numerous tattoos, including "Fit for Duty" on his chest and "Tank" on his upper abdomen. Authorities warned that he was considered armed and dangerous and was also wanted on a statewide parole violation for a past assault conviction.
A manhunt for Vandenberg ensued, and on January 2, 2026, he was located by the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office SWAT team at a property in Crooked River Ranch, north of Redmond. Vandenberg surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody without incident. He was initially booked into jail on the outstanding parole violation warrant.
Following the arrest, the Deschutes County District Attorney's Office began working with detectives on potential criminal charges related to the death of Justin Garrett Jiminez. The investigation into the motive and the circumstances surrounding the shooting is ongoing.
