On the morning of New Year's Eve 2025, a family disturbance call led Concord police to a home on Walnut Avenue where they made a grim discovery. Inside, they found 85-year-old Joyce J. Richardson and her 90-year-old husband, William Richardson, dead from apparent gunshot wounds. The quiet neighborhood was shattered by the violence that had unfolded within the seemingly peaceful residence.
Responding to a call from Joyce herself around 7 a.m., officers arrived to the sound of gunfire. They entered the home to find the elderly couple deceased. A third individual, the couple's 61-year-old son, Kirk Richardson, was found at the scene and taken into custody in connection with the killings.
Subsequent investigations revealed a troubled history within the family. Court records indicated that Joyce and William had sought a restraining order against their son for domestic violence as far back as 1989. Neighbors also reported unsettling encounters with Kirk, with one having sought a restraining order after he allegedly made violent threats. Following his arrest, Kirk reportedly confessed to the murders, telling authorities he had contemplated killing his parents for decades. The Contra Costa District Attorney's Office charged him with two counts of murder with enhancements for using a firearm.
The case took another tragic turn just days later. While in custody at the Martinez Detention Facility, Kirk Richardson was found unresponsive in his cell on the evening of January 8, 2026. Authorities reported that earlier that day he had been treated at a hospital for self-inflicted head injuries sustained by banging his head against a wall in his cell. After being medically cleared and returned to the jail, he was later found deceased. His death is being investigated by both the sheriff's office and the district attorney's office.
