India Prince, a 24-year-old woman from Antioch, California, tragically lost her life on July 24, 2021, in a shooting incident on Highway 4 in Concord. The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. while she was driving her Toyota Camry westbound. India was accompanied by her 17-year-old brother, who was also wounded in the shooting, and her 2-year-old son, who fortunately was not injured. The shooting caused her vehicle to crash into a metal guardrail at the top of the Port Chicago Highway off-ramp. India, who worked as a cosmetologist, was described by her family as a loving and selfless individual, not involved in any gang or criminal activities. Her family believes she was a victim of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The investigation into India's death was undertaken by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), which utilized high-tech tools installed on Highway 4, including surveillance cameras, ShotSpotter gunfire detectors, and license plate readers. These tools were part of a security system aimed at reducing freeway shootings, which had seen a significant decrease in incidents since its implementation. Despite these efforts, the suspect vehicle fled the scene, and no immediate arrests were made. The investigation continued as authorities sought to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible for this "cowardly" act, as described by India's family.

India's death was part of a troubling trend of freeway shootings in the East Bay area, reflecting a broader rise in violent crime across the nation. The community and her family were left devastated by the loss, with her aunt expressing disbelief that anyone could commit such a heinous act. The family remained hopeful that the community would come together to find the person responsible for India's death, emphasizing that she had so much more life to live. The case highlighted the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in addressing and preventing such violent incidents on public roadways.
