In the quiet Minneapolis suburb of Hopkins, the life of 19-year-old Skylar Katherine Kiehl, a White/Caucasian female, was brought to a tragic and sudden end on January 3, 2026. Described by those who knew her as a happy and bubbly light in the world, Skylar was known for her love of singing and her kindhearted nature. A 2024 graduate of Simley High School in Inver Grove Heights, she had a passion for reading, painting, and camping.
The devastating incident unfolded in an apartment on the
1300 block of Cambridge Street, where Skylar was found with a fatal gunshot wound. Police officers responded to a 911 call made by Skylar's 20-year-old boyfriend, Krystofer Patrick Brooks. Brooks claimed that the shooting was accidental, stating that the gun discharged while he was cleaning or unloading it in their bedroom. He told investigators that he had pointed the gun toward the window and pulled the trigger, not realizing Skylar, his girlfriend of two years, had sat up in bed at that moment.
However, authorities grew suspicious of Brooks's account of the events. Investigators noted inconsistencies, observing that the location of Skylar's body and the lack of blood near the window did not seem to align with his story. Further raising concern was the discovery of the handgun on a chair next to the bed with its hammer cocked, a loaded magazine inserted, and a round in the chamber. Texts between Brooks and his mother, in which he stated, "I just killed Skyler on accident omg.. .. The gun should have been empty," were also recovered by police.
Following the initial investigation, Krystofer Patrick Brooks was arrested in connection with Skylar's death. On January 6, 2026, he was formally charged in Hennepin County District Court with second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter. Brooks, who possessed a permit to carry a firearm and had undergone gun safety training, was jailed with bail set at $500,000 pending his court appearance.
