A quiet Sunday morning in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, was shattered by a string of violence that began with the death of 65-year-old Joseph Holt III. Holt was discovered in his vehicle around 7:20 a.m. in the vicinity of Watkins Park Plaza, suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. A retired employee of the US Postal Service, Holt was remembered by his family as a kind man who was simply living his best life.
He was about to go to church when he was tragically killed in what police have described as a random act of violence. His family described the attack as "an act of pure evil."
The violence did not end with Holt's death. Later that same day, in the evening, two other individuals were shot and injured in separate but related incidents in the same area. A man was shot in his vehicle on Darlenen Street, and a woman was found shot in her car on Cambleton Drive. A fourth person was also shot at but was not injured. The subsequent shootings created a climate of fear in the community.
In the wake of the shootings, Prince George's County police quickly launched an investigation and canvassed the area. Their efforts led to the swift apprehension of a person of interest, 26-year-old Damonte Marcel Williams of Upper Marlboro. A rifle, described as being similar to a smaller version of an AK-47, was also recovered and has been linked to Holt's murder. Williams has since been charged with first and second-degree murder in connection with Holt's death, as well as three counts of attempted first and second-degree murder for the other shootings. He is currently being held without bond. Authorities have stated that they believe Williams was responsible for all the shootings and that the victims were randomly targeted.
