In the early hours of Saturday, January 10, 2026, the life of 21-year-old Zachary Smith was tragically cut short in a Wilmington, North Carolina apartment. Wilmington Police Department officers responded to a call shortly after 3 a.m. in the 4900 block of Pepys Lane, where they discovered Smith suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel provided life-saving measures at the scene before transporting him to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he ultimately
succumbed to his injuries.
Born in Raleigh on December 14, 2004, Zachary, affectionately known as "Zac," was remembered for his kind heart, wit, and infectious smile. A 2023 graduate of Sanderson High School, he had recently embarked on a new chapter in his life, beginning an HVAC program at Cape Fear Community College in January. He was a determined and hardworking individual who had previously worked as an electrical apprentice and for a moving company. His family and friends recall his passion for working out, his creative cooking, and his love for his two younger brothers.
Following a weekend of investigation by detectives, and in consultation with the New Hanover County District Attorney's Office, an arrest was made in connection with the fatal shooting. Charles Lane, also 21 years old, was taken into custody and charged with involuntary manslaughter.
During his first court appearance on January 14, a judge set Lane's secured bond at $50,000, and he was subsequently released. A future court appearance has been scheduled for January 29. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is ongoing.
