In the evening hours of Friday, January 16, 2026, a burst of gunfire shattered the night at a Houston apartment complex, leaving a woman dead and a community reeling. Shyta Campbell, a 37-year-old woman, was fatally shot inside an apartment on the 6200 block of W. Tidwell. Although she was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
The events leading up to the tragedy reportedly began with an argument that escalated and moved to the front
door of the apartment, where the shooting occurred. Neighbors later recounted hearing as many as 30 gunshots, a terrifying testament to the violence of the encounter. Inside the apartment at the time were three children, two 6-year-olds and an 8-year-old, who were thankfully unharmed during the incident. It was noted by Campbell's sister that she did not reside in that particular apartment, and the children were not hers.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Houston police detained a woman for questioning, but she was later released. Early the next morning, a man was also taken into custody in connection with the case. As of the latest reports, the Houston Police Department has not publicly identified any suspects or announced any formal charges in the death of Shyta Campbell.
