Her mother, Melissa Dawn Cole, and Alecia were both fatally shot by Jaime Piero Cole, Alecia's estranged father. The incident occurred when Jaime Cole arrived at Melissa's apartment to drop off their two sons. An argument ensued, and despite Alecia's attempts to intervene, Jaime Cole shot both Melissa and Alecia multiple times before fleeing the scene with the younger son. The younger son was later found unharmed and taken into protective custody.
Jaime Piero Cole was arrested the following day in Wharton County, Texas, and charged with capital murder. During his trial, Cole admitted to the killings but claimed that the act was not premeditated. He mentioned that he had bought the murder weapon, a .22 caliber semiautomatic pistol, the day before the shooting.
