Ermias Joseph Asghedom, widely known as Nipsey Hussle, was a Grammy-nominated rapper and entrepreneur who was tragically shot and killed on March 31, 2019, at the age of 33. The incident occurred outside his Marathon Clothing store in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Around 3:20 p.m., Nipsey Hussle was standing with two other individuals when a man approached and fired multiple shots at them. Nipsey was struck several times and was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. at a nearby hospital.
The two other victims survived the attack. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner confirmed that Nipsey Hussle died from gunshot wounds to both the head and torso.
The suspect in the shooting was identified as Eric Ronald Holder Jr., a 29-year-old man who had a personal dispute with Nipsey Hussle. Holder, who was also known by his rap name Fly Mac, was believed to have had a conversation with Nipsey before leaving and returning with a handgun to carry out the shooting. The incident was not related to gang rivalries, despite Holder's gang affiliations. Instead, it stemmed from a personal disagreement between the two men. Holder fled the scene in a white Chevy Cruze driven by a woman who later claimed she was unaware of the shooting.
Eric Holder Jr. was arrested on April 2, 2019, in Bellflower, California, by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. He was charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. Holder's attorney, Chris Darden, entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf. The case garnered significant media attention, partly due to Darden's previous role as a prosecutor in the O.J. Simpson trial.
In February 2023, Eric Holder Jr. was sentenced to 60 years to life in prison. The sentence included 25 years to life for the murder of Nipsey Hussle, an additional 25 years for a firearm sentencing enhancement, and 10 years for assault with a firearm. The judge acknowledged Holder's mental health issues but emphasized the devastating impact of his actions on the victims and their families. Holder's attorney expressed disappointment with the first-degree murder verdict and indicated plans to appeal the sentence.
