In the late hours of a Saturday night in January, a tragic and violent series of events unfolded on the border of Belleville and Swansea, Illinois, leaving an 18-year-old woman dead. On January 17, 2026, Shenandoah Burton of Swansea was shot and killed in what police have described as a domestic-related incident. The violence erupted around 11:19 p.m. in the 1700 block of Jamestown Road, where officers from both the Belleville and Swansea police departments were dispatched following reports of multiple gunshots. Upon their arrival, they discovered a grim scene: Burton was found deceased in the middle of the road from a gunshot wound.
The investigation into Burton's death quickly identified a suspect, 25-year-old Christopher D. Boyd of St. Louis. According to police, Boyd had been stalking his ex-girlfriend earlier in the evening following a breakup. Burton was with the ex-girlfriend and another friend at the time of the incident. Surveillance footage reportedly showed Burton approaching Boyd's vehicle, at which point he immediately fired his weapon, fatally wounding her. Gunfire also struck the vehicle occupied by Boyd's ex-girlfriend and the other friend, causing non-life-threatening injuries to one of them.
Following the shooting, Boyd fled the scene in a silver Chevrolet Impala, prompting a law enforcement alert for his vehicle. The manhunt came to an end in the early hours of Sunday morning in Perry County, Missouri. At approximately 2:30 a.m., sheriff's deputies spotted Boyd's vehicle traveling southbound on Interstate 55. Before officers could make contact, Boyd took his own life with what authorities believe to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators believe he was attempting to flee to Alabama. With the death of the sole suspect, Belleville police have stated that they are not seeking any other individuals in connection with this case, though the investigation remains active.
