Jolaine Lanman, a 35-year-old Caucasian woman, was tragically murdered on September 27, 1989, in her home in Belleville, St. Clair County, Illinois. She was found dead alongside her 3-year-old son, Kenneth Lanman. Both victims were discovered by John Lanman, Jolaine's husband, who returned home around 5 p.m. to find their bodies. The scene was gruesome, with Jolaine's face covered in blood and a pair of scissors protruding from her neck. It was determined that both Jolaine and Kenneth died from blunt trauma to the head and stab wounds to the neck.
The investigation quickly led to the arrest of Dale R. Anderson, who was apprehended two days after the murders. Anderson, a former employee of the Illinois Department of Public Aid, had been fired from his job over a year before the murders. The prosecution argued that Anderson committed the murders to frame his former supervisors, against whom he held a grudge. A note found at the crime scene implicated the supervisors and listed their vehicle license plate numbers. Handwriting experts confirmed that the note was written by Anderson.
During the trial, it was revealed that Anderson had a history of erratic behavior and had previously been convicted of disorderly conduct. Witnesses testified that they had seen Anderson in the neighborhood on the day of the murders, and his car was identified by several neighbors. Anderson's defense attempted to argue that he was mentally unstable and not responsible for his actions, but the jury found him guilty of the double murders. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The case also had connections to another murder that occurred in 1988. Anderson was suspected of killing Audrey Cardenas, an intern reporter for the Belleville News-Democrat. Cardenas was found dead in a dry creek bed near Belleville Township High School East. Although there was no physical evidence linking Anderson to Cardenas' murder, the prosecution argued that Anderson's obsession with the case and his attempts to frame his former supervisors for both murders indicated his involvement. Despite these suspicions, Anderson was never formally charged with Cardenas' murder.
Anderson served his life sentence at the Pontiac Correctional Centre in Pontiac, Illinois, until his death in June 2023 at the age of 71. The official cause of his death was not released, but it was not considered suspicious. The tragic deaths of Jolaine and Kenneth Lanman remain a somber reminder of the devastating impact of violence and the importance of justice for the victims and their families.
