Nalisia T. Barnes, a 20-year-old African American woman from East St. Louis, Illinois, tragically lost her life on March 30, 2020, in Belleville, Illinois. According to the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department, the incident occurred in the 2500 block of Lucy Drive. Deputies responded to a report of a shooting and found Nalisia with a gunshot wound. Despite immediate first aid efforts by others present in the home and the prompt arrival of emergency services, she succumbed to her injuries approximately 30 minutes later.
The investigation revealed that Nalisia's death was the result of an accidental shooting. She was handling a 9mm Glock firearm when it discharged, striking her in the head. The firearm was legally owned by one of the residents in the home. At the time of the incident, there were four other individuals present, none of whom were injured. The sheriff's department concluded that no foul play was involved, and no charges were filed against anyone present.
There were no arrests, suspects, or litigations related to Nalisia's death, as the authorities determined it to be an unfortunate accident. The case did not proceed to any murder or law-related investigations beyond the initial inquiry by the sheriff's department.
