On the afternoon of Saturday, November 29, 2025, a 17-year-old male named Anjuan Maffett was tragically killed in a shooting incident in southwest Atlanta, Georgia. The teenager had traveled to the West Ridge Shopping Center located along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard with the intention of purchasing a pair of Timberland shoes. According to family members, including his father Eric Evans, Anjuan was in the parking lot outside the Bando Restaurant when an argument reportedly broke out.
The confrontation escalated into violence, and Anjuan was shot in broad daylight around noon. Police officers responded to the scene, but the teen was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival.
Following the shooting, the Atlanta Police Department launched a homicide investigation and quickly appealed to the public for assistance. Authorities released an image of a person of interest they wished to question in connection with the fatal incident, noting that an argument had preceded the gunfire. As of early December 2025, investigators had not announced any specific arrests or formal charges against a named suspect, though a $5,000 reward was offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment. The police emphasized their need to identify the man seen in the released images to advance the case.
The loss deeply affected Anjuan’s family and the local community, who gathered for a balloon release in his honor on the following Wednesday, releasing black and red balloons to pay tribute to his life. His father expressed deep grief, sharing that he now avoids the area where his son was killed, and noted that Anjuan’s mother was hospitalized due to the shock of the tragedy. A funeral service was scheduled for mid-December at Now Faith Apostolic Ministries, with arrangements handled by the Willie A. Watkins Funeral Home. Family members, including his uncle Roy Magby, made public pleas for an end to the senseless violence claiming young lives in the city.
