The life of 22-year-old Jose Figueroa Jr. came to a tragic and sudden end during the early morning hours of November 30, 2025, in Lancaster, California. Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the 1700 block of East Avenue J-4 at approximately 12:07 a.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon arriving at the scene, authorities discovered the young Latino male lying in a parking lot, suffering from at least one gunshot wound.
Despite the immediate response of paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the location, marking a somber moment for the community and his grieving family.
Investigators learned that the incident stemmed from a confrontation between Figueroa and another individual. Witnesses indicated that the victim had been involved in an altercation when a man produced a handgun and fired, striking Figueroa. The shooter subsequently fled the scene in a vehicle, heading eastbound through the complex. Detectives moved quickly in their investigation, and later that same day, an arrest was made in connection with the homicide. Authorities took 56-year-old Michael Bates into custody at 5:00 p.m. on suspicion of murder. He was subsequently booked and held at the Men's Central Jail, with bail set at more than two million dollars. Known affectionately to his friends and family as Giovanni, Figueroa was remembered as a generous and thoughtful individual with a passion for barbering. His loved ones recalled his fiercely protective nature and his dreams of traveling the world and one day starting a family of his own. He left behind a large circle of relatives, including his parents, three brothers, and four sisters, all of whom were left to mourn the loss of a young man whose life was cut short just as he was beginning to carve out his path in the world.
