In early December 2025, the community of Nocatee, Florida, was shaken by the violent death of 21-year-old Charles Wright Neill Tyree. A resident of the area known for his charismatic personality and infectious spirit, the male victim was deeply connected to his local roots in DeSoto County. Friends and family remembered him as a hardworking young man with a passion for the outdoors, particularly fishing and airboating. He took great pride in his customized truck and was often seen working on it or helping others in need, described by loved ones as someone who would not hesitate to assist a neighbor.
The fatal incident occurred on or around December 2, 2025, when authorities believe Tyree was lured from a residence. According to reports from the DeSoto County Sheriff's Office, the young man received a phone call from an acquaintance asking him to meet outside a home. Upon exiting the residence to meet the caller in the driveway, Tyree was shot. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, the injuries proved fatal, leaving his close-knit circle of family and friends in shock and mourning just days before his twenty-second birthday.
Law enforcement officers quickly identified a suspect in the shooting, 21-year-old Joel Herrera Godinez, who was subsequently taken into custody. Investigators stated that Godinez admitted to the killing but claimed he acted in self-defense. However, detectives proceeded with charges against him, and he was arrested in connection with the homicide. The investigation revealed that the two men had worked together previously, adding a layer of personal tragedy for those who knew them.
Following the shooting, the community rallied around Tyree’s grieving family, organizing fundraisers to assist with funeral expenses. A visitation and service were scheduled for later in the month to honor his memory, with tributes pouring in describing him as a "light to others." Meanwhile, the legal process began for Godinez as he faced murder charges for his alleged role in the senseless violence that claimed the life of the young Nocatee resident.
