On the afternoon of December 8, 2025, a violent domestic disturbance occurred at a residence in the 9600 block of Old Independence Road in Brenham, Texas. Deputies with the Washington County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene around 3:45 p.m. after receiving a call from a man who stated he had shot his father and sister. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered two victims suffering from gunshot wounds.
42-year-old female Skye Schumpert was found with a critical wound to her head, while her father, 67-year-old Mark Schumpert, had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso.
Both victims were transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston for emergency treatment. While Mark Schumpert survived the attack and was later released to recover at home, Skye Schumpert remained in critical condition for several days. She succumbed to her injuries one week later, passing away at 8:25 a.m. on Monday, December 15, 2025.
The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Clay Walker Schumpert, was detained at the scene after initially refusing to comply with deputies' commands. He is the brother of the deceased and the son of the surviving victim. Clay Schumpert was arrested and booked into the Washington County Jail. Following Skye's death, the charges against him were upgraded to include murder. He also faces two counts of Aggravated Assault of a Date, Family, or Household Member with a Weapon and five counts of Assault of a Public Servant. Authorities noted that the suspect had previously been arrested by Brenham police in October 2025 following a narcotics investigation into marijuana distribution. The Texas Rangers are assisting the Washington County Sheriff's Office with the ongoing investigation.
