On the evening of December 10, 2025, violence struck the Morrell Park neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland, resulting in the untimely death of 19-year-old male Davon Smallwood. Officers from the Baltimore Police Department responded to a reported shooting in the 1900 block of Harman Avenue at approximately 5:15 p.m. Upon their arrival, first responders discovered Smallwood suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite the immediate presence of emergency personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene, sparking an immediate homicide investigation in the Southern District.
Detectives quickly began piecing together the events leading up to the tragedy, utilizing surveillance footage from the area to reconstruct the crime. The video evidence reportedly depicted a harrowing sequence in which three individuals dressed in black dragged the victim out of a vehicle. The footage showed the group assaulting Smallwood before he was fatally shot in the street. Investigators were able to identify a potential suspect in part due to a distinctive limp observed in the surveillance recordings, which helped narrow their search in the hours immediately following the murder.
Later that same evening, police tracked down 22-year-old Devin Shadle, locating him in the 2500 block of Washington Boulevard, just a short distance from where the shooting occurred. Shadle was taken into custody without incident a few hours after the crime. A search of his residence allegedly recovered clothing matching what was worn during the attack, along with ammunition and other evidence. Authorities formally charged Shadle with murder and transported him to the Central Booking Intake Facility to await legal proceedings.
The arrest drew attention to Shadle's prior interactions with the legal system, as court records indicated he had been acquitted of a separate shooting and armed robbery attempt in June 2024 due to insufficient witness testimony. While Shadle was the only person immediately charged in connection with Smallwood’s death, police continued to investigate the involvement of the other individuals seen in the footage. The case also prompted further inquiry into a potential link with another fatal shooting of a teenager that occurred in the same vicinity just days later, though Shadle remained in custody facing charges specifically for the killing of Smallwood.
