On the morning of December 15, 2025, authorities in Clovis, New Mexico, responded to a distress call reporting a potential burglary at a residence on York Drive. Upon arrival, officers were greeted outside the home by 19-year-old Darren Munoz, who claimed that everything was fine but initially hesitated to allow law enforcement inside, stating his parents were sleeping unclothed.
After gaining entry to the bedroom, police discovered 71-year-old female Dina Munoz deceased from a gunshot wound to the head, alongside her husband, Oscar "Steve" Munoz, who had also suffered a severe head injury. Oscar was transported to a hospital in Lubbock, Texas, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation quickly shifted focus when inconsistencies appeared in the son's account of events. Detectives learned that the crime had been orchestrated as a murder-for-hire plot motivated by financial greed. According to court documents, Darren Munoz believed he stood to inherit a significant sum of money, including assets from a convenience store franchise, if his parents were deceased. Evidence, including statements from a romantic partner and home security footage, indicated that Darren had solicited his friend, 18-year-old Julio Zamora, to carry out the killings. The plan allegedly involved Darren leaving the garage door open for Zamora to enter the home and shoot the couple while they slept.
Following the discovery of the bodies and subsequent interviews, police arrested both teenagers. Julio Zamora was apprehended at his home, where he was reportedly found in possession of a firearm believed to be used in the shooting. He allegedly admitted to his role in the crime, confirming that he had been hired by Darren. Both suspects were booked into the Curry County Jail. Darren Munoz was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and criminal solicitation, while Zamora faced charges of two counts of first-degree murder and conspiracy. Both individuals remained in custody awaiting court proceedings as the community mourned the loss of the long-time residents.
