On the night of December 16, 2025, violence struck the Iron Triangle neighborhood of Richmond, California, claiming the life of a 50-year-old male resident named Larry Russel Jr. Officers from the Richmond Police Department were alerted to the situation at approximately 11:23 p.m. after the city’s ShotSpotter system detected gunfire in the vicinity.
Responding units rushed to the 300 block of Macdonald Avenue, located in the city’s downtown corridor near Third Street and Nevin Park, where they discovered the victim suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Despite the quick arrival of law enforcement and the subsequent administration of first aid and life-saving measures by officers at the scene, the injuries proved fatal. Russel was pronounced dead before he could be transported to a hospital, marking the city's fifth homicide of the year. The Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office later formally identified the victim, confirming his residency in Richmond.
As of late December 2025, homicide detectives continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, but no suspects had been taken into custody and no arrests had been made in connection with the case. Authorities urged anyone with information regarding the incident to contact Detective Farr at the Richmond Police Department, as the search for those responsible remained ongoing.
