On December 16, 2025, law enforcement officers in Menlo Park, California, mobilized in response to reports of an armed individual in a parked vehicle. The situation unfolded around 12:30 p.m. on the 2200 block of Avy Avenue, drawing a significant police presence to the area. Authorities had received information regarding a missing person who was reportedly suicidal and in possession of a handgun. The individual inside the vehicle was later identified as 22-year-old male Alexis Valverde Ruiz, a resident of Riverbank, California, located near Modesto.
The potential threat prompted immediate safety protocols in the surrounding neighborhood. Two nearby schools, the Las Lomitas Elementary School District Office, and Saint Denis Church were placed on lockdown to ensure the safety of students, staff, and parishioners. Residents and local businesses were also advised to shelter in place while officers secured the perimeter around the occupied vehicle. Crisis negotiators attempted to make contact with the occupant multiple times, but they were unable to establish communication.
Utilizing drones, an armored vehicle, and ballistic shields to safely approach the scene, police eventually confirmed that the individual inside the vehicle was deceased. The San Mateo County Coroner's Office subsequently verified the identity of the deceased as Alexis Valverde Ruiz. The investigation determined that he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Following the discovery, the lockdowns were lifted, and the area was declared secure. Authorities concluded that there were no other suspects involved in the death, and no arrests were made in connection with the incident.
