On the morning of Wednesday, December 17, 2025, a violent disturbance erupted at the Greystone Apartments in Cahokia Heights, Illinois. Residents at the complex, located in the 200 block of Miller Court, reported hearing gunfire around 9:33 a.m. Emergency responders arrived to find two victims suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the victims was identified as Demario Johnson, a 36-year-old male resident of the complex. He was transported to Touchette Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 9:59 a.m. The second victim, an 11-year-old boy, was also struck by gunfire and taken to St. Louis Children’s Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators quickly turned their attention to the circumstances surrounding the shooting, revealing that the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute. Police learned that Johnson had been involved in a verbal altercation with his brother, 41-year-old Quliac Halfacre, who had come to the apartment complex to sell a vehicle. The argument reportedly began over an accusation regarding Halfacre’s girlfriend. Witness statements and court testimony indicated that the confrontation escalated physically when Halfacre struck Johnson, shortly before multiple shots were fired. Halfacre fled the scene on foot, allegedly discarding his weapon as he ran.
Law enforcement officers subsequently apprehended Halfacre, charging him in connection with the fatal incident. On Friday, December 19, prosecutors filed charges including unlawful possession of a firearm by a repeat felony offender, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, and aggravated battery. During a detention hearing the following Monday, a judge ordered Halfacre to be held without bail until his trial, denying a defense request for release based on self-defense claims and family obligations. The court proceedings also confirmed the familial relationship between the suspect and the deceased, noting the tragedy of one brother’s death at the hands of another just days before the holiday season.
