Andrew Nunez, 28, a Hispanic/Latino male, was fatally shot on October 27, 2025, while responding to a domestic violence call in Rancho Cucamonga, California. Shortly after 12:30 p.m., deputies from the Rancho Cucamonga Station were dispatched to a home on Hollyhock Drive for a report of a man with a gun threatening a woman. As deputies arrived, the suspect opened fire. Nunez was struck in the head, and fellow deputies rushed him to a waiting helicopter.
He was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, where lifesaving efforts could not overcome his wounds.
The shooter fled the neighborhood on a motorcycle, triggering a high-speed pursuit on the 210 Freeway that reached extreme speeds. Law enforcement coordinated to contain the threat as the rider weaved through traffic. An off-duty narcotics officer in an unmarked vehicle performed a legal intervention maneuver, causing the motorcycle to crash and ending the pursuit before more people were hurt. The suspect was treated at the scene and transported to a hospital in stable condition.
Authorities identified the suspect as 47-year-old Angelo Jose Saldivar of San Bernardino. He remained hospitalized under guard following the crash. Officials said they expected to seek murder charges in connection with the killing, including the alleged murder of a peace officer, once the suspect was medically cleared. In the days that followed, flags were lowered across California and a candlelight vigil was organized at Rancho Cucamonga City Hall as the community and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department mourned Nunez and honored his service.
