The life of 62-year-old Gerard Paul 'Marter' Essner was tragically cut short on October 6, 2025, in Mississippi County, Missouri. A resident of the New Hamburg and Benton area, Gerard was a devoted family man, a retired Sergeant First Class in the United States Army National Guard, and a lifelong farmer who operated Essner Farms alongside his son. Known for his humor and willingness to help others, he had spent the day engaging in his regular routine before he suddenly went missing, prompting
concerned family members to contact law enforcement when he failed to return.
The search for the missing farmer led authorities to a rural property located at 8101 County Road 408 in Bertrand, Missouri, the residence of 36-year-old Nathan B. Peters. Upon arriving at the scene to investigate the disappearance, law enforcement officers made a grim discovery. Gerard’s body was found concealed under a tarp beneath a porch on the property. It was determined that he had been shot and killed, an act described by observers as unprovoked violence against a man who had simply been going about his day.
As investigators attempted to secure the scene, the situation escalated into a volatile standoff. The suspect, Peters, barricaded himself inside the residence, leading to a massive response from multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Sikeston Department of Public Safety. During the ensuing exchange of gunfire, Sikeston Public Safety Officer Henry Franklin, a tactical team member, was struck and killed in the line of duty.
