In the early morning hours, she drove to the gas pumps at the corner of Rigsby Avenue and South W.W. White Road, where a maroon or burgundy vehicle that had followed her pulled in. Two people stepped out and opened fire on her car. One of the passengers, a 33-year-old woman, was shot in the leg and survived; Kiante was struck multiple times and did not.
