Madalyn Murray O’Hair, a 76-year-old white female and prominent atheist activist, was murdered on September 29, 1995, in San Antonio, Texas. Known for her role in the landmark 1963 Supreme Court case that ended mandatory Bible readings in public schools, O’Hair was a polarizing figure who founded the American Atheists organization and was often referred to as “the most hated woman in America.”
At the time of her death, she lived and worked in Austin, Texas, alongside her son Jon Garth Murray and granddaughter Robin Murray O’Hair, both of whom also disappeared and were later found to be victims in the same crime.
On August 27, 1995, Madalyn, Jon and Robin were kidnapped by three men—David Roland Waters, Gary Paul Karr, and Danny Fry—who posed as delivery workers. The trio was taken to San Antonio and held in a hotel suite at the Warren Inn. The kidnappers demanded $1 million in exchange for their release, knowing that the American Atheists organization had access to offshore funds. Over the course of several weeks, Jon was coerced into wiring $600,000 from a New Zealand account and purchasing gold coins from a San Antonio jeweler. Despite complying, the victims were not released.
On September 29, 1995, the three victims were murdered at a La Quinta Inn in San Antonio. Jon was killed first, followed by Madalyn and Robin. Their bodies were rolled in bedspreads, transported to Austin, and dismembered in a storage unit. The remains were placed in barrels and buried on a remote ranch near Camp Wood, Texas. The crime remained unsolved for years, with speculation that the family had fled with the money. It wasn’t until 2001 that the bodies were discovered, following a plea deal with David Waters, who led authorities to the burial site.
David Waters, a former employee of American Atheists with a violent criminal history, was identified as the mastermind behind the plot. He had previously been convicted of murder in 1965 and was fired from the organization in 1995 for embezzling funds. Waters pleaded guilty to conspiracy to kidnap, robbery, and murder, and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. He died of lung cancer in 2003 while incarcerated.
Gary Paul Karr, another suspect with a history of armed robbery and kidnapping, was convicted in 2000 of conspiracy to commit extortion, interstate travel to commit violent acts, money laundering, and transportation of stolen property. Although acquitted of kidnapping due to the absence of the victims’ bodies at the time, he received a life sentence. In a 2021 resentencing hearing, Karr was again given the maximum sentence of nearly 50 years.
Danny Fry, the third accomplice, was murdered shortly after the O’Hairs. His headless and handless body was discovered near the Trinity River in Dallas in October 1995 but remained unidentified until 1999. Authorities believe Fry was killed by Waters and Karr after expressing remorse over the murders.
The case, marked by betrayal, greed, and brutality, shocked the nation and brought closure to a mystery that had lingered for years. Madalyn Murray O’Hair’s legacy as a fierce advocate for secularism was overshadowed by the tragic and gruesome circumstances of her death.
