On the afternoon of June 6, 2025, Kevronte Frank Thomas Johnson, a 23-year-old Black/African American man, was caught in a burst of gun violence along West Hampton Avenue in Milwaukee. Shortly after 4:15 p.m., Milwaukee police were called to the area of North 69th Street and West Hampton Avenue after reports of gunfire. Officers found two people who had been shot.
Johnson suffered fatal gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second victim, identified only as being 22 years old, was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office later publicly identified Johnson as the person killed.
Johnson's shooting occurred during an especially violent few minutes on Hampton Avenue. Approximately six minutes earlier, police had responded to a separate shooting near North 46th Street and West Hampton Avenue, about a mile and a half away. That incident left another person dead and three others wounded. Because of the timing and proximity, the two shootings initially raised questions about whether they might have been connected. Milwaukee police subsequently said the June 6 shootings were separate incidents and were not believed to be connected.
Investigators did not immediately disclose what led to the shooting that killed Johnson, whether an argument or other confrontation preceded the gunfire, or how many shooters may have been involved. In the immediate aftermath, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson condemned the violence and said there was no justification for using firearms to settle disagreements, expressing confidence that those responsible for the shootings would eventually be brought to justice.
The separate shooting near 46th and Hampton later resulted in criminal charges against 14-year-old Donavin Webb, who was accused of first-degree reckless homicide, attempted robbery by use of force, and first-degree recklessly endangering safety in connection with that incident. Those charges, however, concerned the 46th Street shooting and not the shooting that killed Kevronte Johnson near 69th and Hampton. Public reporting located on Johnson's case does not identify Webb or anyone else as a suspect in Johnson's death.
