Haylee Renae Lounsbury, a 21-year-old White/Caucasian woman from Janesville, Wisconsin, was caught in a deadly shooting at the Aspen Square Apartments on North Pontiac Drive on June 17, 2025. Although the violence occurred that day, later official reporting established that Haylee did not die on June 17. She was critically wounded, remained hospitalized for nearly a week, and died from her injuries on June 23.
Haylee had grown up in the Stateline area, graduated from South Beloit High School in 2022, and worked for Guiding Hands and Willowick. Her family remembered her as a devoted mother who centered much of her life around caring for her young son.
The violence began late on the morning of June 17 when Janesville authorities received a report of a family-related problem at the apartment complex. Shortly afterward, a 911 caller reported gunfire. Officers responded at approximately 11:04 a.m. and entered the building, where they encountered a devastating scene. Three adults had suffered fatal gunshot wounds, while a fourth person—Haylee—was still alive but gravely injured. Officers immediately began lifesaving efforts before paramedics transported her to Mercy Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police also recovered a firearm near one of the deceased individuals. Authorities said there were no children inside the apartment when the shooting occurred, although children were elsewhere in the building.
The three people initially pronounced dead were Julia Katherine Cvicker, Scott Minot Roberts and Jahvarius Jakai Wicks. Haylee remained in critical condition after the shooting, but on June 23 she died at a local hospital. The Rock County Medical Examiner publicly identified her two days later. At that time, additional medical testing was still being conducted regarding the formal cause and manner of death, but police were already investigating the episode as a murder-suicide involving a domestic relationship.
Investigators later determined that Jahvarius Wicks was responsible for the shootings. In July 2025, the Janesville Police Department announced that Wicks had shot Haylee Lounsbury, Julia Cvicker and Scott Roberts before turning the gun on himself. Police said the incident was connected to a previous domestic relationship involving Wicks and one of the victims. According to investigators, that person had gone to the apartment to retrieve personal belongings when the violence occurred. Authorities did not publicly identify in the reporting which of the three victims had previously been in the relationship with Wicks, so it would be inappropriate to assume that detail.
Because Wicks died at the scene from what investigators determined was a self-inflicted gunshot wound, there was no arrest, criminal charging proceeding, trial or conviction connected to him for the three killings. Police did not announce another shooter or surviving suspect, and officials stated that there was no continuing danger to the surrounding community. Authorities also said early in the investigation that the shooting was not believed to be politically motivated or drug-related.
Haylee's death left behind a young child and a family who described her as deeply loving and caring. Her obituary said she adored her son and enjoyed taking him to parks and splash pads, while her work reflected what relatives described as her natural caregiving personality. What began as a call concerning a family problem on June 17 ultimately became a four-death tragedy, with investigators concluding that Haylee and two other victims were killed by Wicks before he took his own life. Haylee's death on June 23 marked the final loss from a shooting that had already devastated several families and the Janesville community.
