According to an arrest affidavit and contemporaneous reporting, the violence began when a man in a red sedan drove up to a group gathered outside the complex and opened fire, fatally wounding 26-year-old Jorge Isaac Espejo at the entrance. As the car attempted to flee, Yanez-Nava threw rocks at the vehicle; the driver stopped, got out, chased him, and shot him near an apartment doorway. Security footage and witness accounts described the sequence, while officers later found one victim at the entrance and Yanez-Nava lying in front of an apartment door.
San Antonio police arrested 54-year-old Joe John Perez and charged him with capital murder in connection with the killings. Reports noted he had a lengthy criminal history, and a judge set his bond at $800,000 as the investigation continued. Affidavit details linked shell casings and vehicle damage on a red Mitsubishi Lancer to evidence from the scene, helping investigators tie Perez to the shooting.
