In the quiet community of unincorporated Clackamas County, just outside of Portland, Oregon, a tragedy unfolded that would cut short the life of a young boy. Twelve-year-old Elios Renteria, a Hispanic male and a sixth-grade student at Hosford Middle School, was found with a life-threatening gunshot wound in the backyard of a home on Southeast Glen Echo Avenue on the morning of Tuesday, May 13, 2025.
Deputies from the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office responded to a call shortly before
8:45 a.m. regarding a juvenile who had reportedly shot themselves. Upon arrival, they discovered young Elios gravely injured. He was immediately transported to a local trauma hospital for emergency medical care. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Elios succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, May 17, 2025.
The initial reports from law enforcement and school officials described the incident as what appeared to be an accidental gunshot wound. The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office has stated that the circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under active investigation. As of now, no arrests have been made, and there has been no public identification of any suspect or suspects in connection with the incident. The Multnomah County Medical Examiner's Office is tasked with determining the official cause and manner of death.
The loss of Elios has deeply affected the Hosford Middle School community. The school's principal, Jill Liddle, in communication with Elios's family, shared the devastating news with parents and staff. He was remembered as a "sweet, fun-loving, and wonderful kid who brightened the lives of everyone who knew him." In anticipation of a planned school trip to Kuratli camp, which Elios was scheduled to attend, the school made arrangements for trauma counselors to be available to support both students and staff through their grief.
