Twenty-two-year-old Janaysia Lewis, a Black woman from Columbus, was shot on the morning of September 18, 2025, at the Sterling Court Apartments on the city's east side, near Krumm Park. Officers were dispatched around 9:24 a.m. to the 3200 block of Sterling Lane and found multiple victims with gunshot wounds; Janaysia Lewis, age 22, was taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center and pronounced dead at 10:05 a.m.
Two additional victims were transported to separate hospitals with injuries that were described as non–life-threatening.
Investigators quickly identified a suspect and, within hours of the shooting, announced the arrest of 32-year-old Zandra Wignal. Police said Zandra Wignal was charged with murder in the death of Janaysia Lewis, age 22, and that two other people were wounded during the same burst of gunfire. Reporting from the scene noted shots were fired from both inside and outside an apartment building as the incident unfolded.
According to a criminal complaint summarized by local media, detectives stated that Zandra Wignal admitted to shooting Janaysia Lewis, a 22-year-old woman, after an altercation in which Janaysia Lewis allegedly pushed Wignal's face away. The confrontation escalated rapidly, culminating in the triple shooting shortly after 9:20 a.m., and leaving the neighborhood rattled by violence in broad daylight just blocks from an elementary school.
In the days that followed, family members shared remembrances of Janaysia Lewis, age 22, a young woman whose killing left two other women injured and an extended family grieving. Her mother publicly recounted the heartbreak and the chaotic moments surrounding the violence, while community tributes and obituaries marked the loss and announced funeral arrangements. The homicide remains charged to Zandra Wignal, and authorities have encouraged anyone with additional information to contact detectives as the case proceeds through the courts.
