In the early morning hours of the Fourth of July, a domestic dispute in a Coram, New York, home ended in the death of 47-year-old Alex Carter. The male victim was fatally shot at his Townehouse Drive residence following a physical altercation with his girlfriend, Ashley Guimont. The incident, which occurred around 2:30 a.m., concluded with Guimont herself calling 911. Emergency services transported Carter to John T.
Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson, where he was pronounced dead.
Suffolk County Police arrested 44-year-old Ashley Guimont in connection with the shooting. She was subsequently charged with second-degree murder. During her arraignment, prosecutors stated that police discovered a 9mm handgun on the kitchen counter of the home and found a shell casing near Carter's body. They also informed the court that Guimont had admitted to the shooting.
Guimont's defense attorney has argued that she acted in self-defense, claiming she was a victim of ongoing domestic violence. The lawyer alleged that Carter had been strangling her moments before the shooting and that Guimont had visible marks on her face and a swollen neck at the time of her arrest. Initially held without bail, Guimont, who has no prior criminal history, was later granted bail as the case proceeds. If convicted of the murder charge, she faces the possibility of 25 years to life in prison.
