Derrick Bell, 42, a Black man from Raleigh, was shot multiple times in the early morning hours of September 12, 2025, on the 1100 block of Pettis Place near Rock Quarry Road. Officers arrived around 2:10–2:15 a.m. and found him gravely wounded; he was rushed to a hospital and later died of his injuries. An obituary from a local funeral home lists his date of death as September 12.
In the days that followed, Raleigh police identified 43-year-old Bryant Lanorris Baldwin as the suspect and arrested him. Baldwin was charged with murder, discharging a weapon into an occupied property, and possession of a firearm by a felon; authorities noted he was scheduled for a court appearance the following Tuesday but did not describe how they connected him to the shooting.
The shooting occurred on a short street in front of Raleigh National Cemetery, a detail that underscored how close the violence came to a place associated with solemn remembrance. Detectives asked anyone with information to contact the department’s tip line as the investigation continued under the Homicide Unit.
