Derrick Bell, 42, a Black man from Raleigh, was shot multiple times in the early morning hours of September 12, 2025, on the 1100 block of Pettis Place near Rock Quarry Road. Officers arrived around 2:10–2:15 a.m. and found him gravely wounded; he was rushed to a hospital and later died of his injuries. An obituary from a local funeral home lists his date of death as September 12.
