On the night of May 26, 2025, a routine traffic stop in Bloomfield, New Mexico, turned into a tragic event that would ultimately claim the life of Hispanic male officer Timothy Ontiveros, age 32. At approximately 10:55 p.m., Ontiveros and a fellow officer pulled over a vehicle driven by 58-year-old Dennis Armenta. The situation quickly escalated when Armenta refused to cooperate with the officers' requests to roll down his window or provide any form of identification.
For over eight minutes, the officers attempted to negotiate with Armenta, who remained non-compliant and locked inside his car.
The officers determined they had to arrest Armenta for concealing his identity. As they broke a window to gain access to the vehicle and effect the arrest, Armenta produced a handgun and opened fire. Officer Ontiveros was struck by the gunfire. The second officer on the scene immediately returned fire, fatally wounding Armenta. The suspect, who had a criminal history that included assault and resisting arrest, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officer Ontiveros was critically injured and immediately transported to the San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington. He was later airlifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque for more advanced medical care. Despite undergoing multiple surgeries and the tireless efforts of the medical staff, Timothy Ontiveros succumbed to his injuries on June 1, 2025. A dedicated public servant, he had been with the Bloomfield Police Department for about six months and had previously served with the Farmington Police Department. He was also a volunteer firefighter with the Aztec Fire Department. In a final act of service, his organs were donated. The community mourned the loss of the officer, who was remembered for his kindness, professionalism, and commitment to public safety.
