In the early hours of a summer morning in Springfield, Missouri, the life of 19-year-old Lavontae Bennett was tragically cut short. On June 22, 2025, at approximately 4:14 a.m., Springfield police officers were dispatched to a residence on West Webster Street following a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Bennett suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident that led to Bennett's death occurred during a house party. According to his mother, Lavontae was a good young man who was always happy and loving. Neighbors in the area later reported that the house where the shooting took place had been the source of previous disturbances, including loud parties and fights, about which they had contacted the police on several occasions.
In the wake of the shooting, the Springfield Police Department launched a homicide investigation, which quickly led to the identification of a suspect. Bodee Melton, a 22-year-old from the nearby town of Willard, was arrested in connection with Bennett's murder. He was subsequently booked into the Greene County Jail on a charge of second-degree murder.
The case against Melton was then presented to the Greene County Prosecutor's Office for a review of formal charges.
