On the night of August 29, 2025, a violent sequence of events in Trenton, New Jersey, claimed the life of 41-year-old Andrew Damaine Coates, a Black male. Coates, a lifelong resident of the city, was driving when he was struck by gunfire, leading to a multi-vehicle crash that left several others injured. He was transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, where he died from his injuries hours later on August 30, 2025.
The incident began around 11:25 p.m. when Trenton police officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert indicating multiple gunshots near North Olden and Ohio avenues. As officers arrived at the scene, their patrol car was struck by the vehicle driven by Coates, who had lost control after being shot. The impact of the crash also involved a double-parked Volvo, which in turn struck the officers and another civilian.
The chaotic scene resulted in injuries to two Trenton police officers, who were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
A civilian pedestrian was also hit by Coates' out-of-control vehicle and was transported to the hospital for treatment. While at the hospital, authorities learned of a second gunshot victim who had arrived with a wound to his leg; he was reported to be in stable condition.
