In the early morning hours of July 23, 2025, the quiet town of Windom, Minnesota, was shattered by an act of violence that claimed the life of 70-year-old Kathryn Lynn Voelker. A White female, Kathryn was a beloved mother and grandmother whose life was tragically cut short in her own community. The incident began to unfold around 5:19 a.m. when police were dispatched to a residence on 12th Avenue following a report of an assault with a firearm.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Kathryn suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical aid was rendered at the scene before she was transported by ambulance to the Windom Area Health hospital, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries. An autopsy later revealed that she had been shot seven times and the cause of death was blood loss from the multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation into Kathryn's death quickly led authorities to a suspect, 38-year-old Jamie Lee Voelker of Windom. Shortly after the shooting, at approximately 5:28 a.m., police received a call about a burglary at a different residence on River Road. The caller reported that a man had broken into the house and was in the downstairs bathroom. Officers responded to the scene and found Jamie Voelker in the bathtub. He was taken into custody and initially transported to the Windom Area Health for treatment of injuries he sustained during the incident before being booked into the Cottonwood County Jail.
Jamie Voelker has since been charged with second-degree murder with intent, not premeditated, as well as second-degree murder without intent while committing a felony. According to the criminal complaint, a reporting party stated that Jamie Voelker had shot Kathryn with a small-caliber handgun. Her obituary revealed that Kathryn died while bravely and selflessly assisting her son, Jamie. Details from the charges indicate that Jamie, who had allegedly been drinking the night before, woke someone up talking about aliens and his belief that Kathryn Voelker was an alien. When Kathryn entered the home, he reportedly fired numerous shots from a pistol. Before she died, Kathryn was able to tell police that Jamie had called her for help, so she had gone to his house. In the subsequent legal proceedings, concerns about Jamie Voelker's competency to stand trial were raised by his public defender, leading the judge to order a competency evaluation.
