In the early morning hours of September 11, 2025, in Port Huron, Michigan, 17-year-old Kayleb Smerer's life was tragically cut short. A senior at Port Huron Northern High School, Kayleb was known for his leadership qualities, having been recognized as Student of the Month and participating in the Metal Machining Program at TEC. He had a passion for Transformers, Hot Wheels, classic cars, and '80s rock music.
The circumstances of his death were both shocking and devastating.
His own father, 44-year-old Jeffrey Smerer, is accused of fatally shooting him. According to police testimony, Jeffrey Smerer had been planning the attack for about a week, reportedly due to stress over an upcoming sentencing in an unrelated indecent exposure case. On that fateful morning, he allegedly retrieved a. 380 pistol, shot his two younger children, 13-year-old Bentley and 12-year-old Kinzley, before entering the living room and shooting Kayleb in the head as he sat on the couch.
Following the shooting, Jeffrey Smerer's firearm reportedly jammed, and he then attempted to take his own life. His wife and older 20-year-old son intervened and disarmed him. The two younger children sustained critical injuries, with Bentley suffering severe facial fractures and Kinzley being left paralyzed from the neck down.
Jeffrey Smerer was arrested and has since been charged with open murder, two counts of assault with intent to murder, two counts of first-degree child abuse, and multiple felony firearm counts. He was denied bond and has been ordered to have no contact with his surviving children. During a preliminary hearing, a detective testified that Smerer admitted to the shootings. He has been bound over to circuit court to stand trial.
