In the early morning hours of a Friday in Baton Rouge, the life of three-year-old Emouri Woodard was tragically cut short. The young boy, who had just started preschool a week prior, was getting ready for his day with his mother inside their home on Sumrall Drive at approximately 7:30 a.m. While his mother was getting him ready, Emouri somehow came across a loaded handgun.
In a devastating turn of events, the gun discharged, and he accidentally shot himself.
At the time of the incident, other adults were reportedly asleep within the residence. The first police officer to arrive on the heartbreaking scene attempted to render aid, performing CPR and trying to control the bleeding until further help arrived. Despite these efforts, the young male child succumbed to his injuries. The responding officer was so affected by the traumatic event that he was sent home for the remainder of his shift.
Initially, the Baton Rouge Police Department announced they were investigating the incident as a possible case of negligent homicide. However, in the days that followed the tragic accident, law enforcement officials stated that they did not anticipate making any arrests in connection with Emouri's death given the circumstances of the case. The community rallied around the grieving family, holding a benefit dinner to help with the unexpected funeral costs for the boy affectionately known as 'Baby E.' His father, Elliot, who was at work when he received the devastating news, expressed his profound grief over the sudden and tragic loss of his son.
