Kevajae Fitch, 28, a Black/African American man, was shot and killed on July 8, 2025, in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood. Shortly before noon, around 11:45 a.m., he was standing outside in the 600 block of North Monticello Avenue with a 35-year-old man when a gray car pulled up and four gunmen got out and opened fire. Fitch suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head and body and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The second victim was struck three times and hospitalized at Mount Sinai in serious condition.
The attack unfolded on a neighborhood sidewalk in broad daylight, leaving a sudden scar on a busy summer morning in Humboldt Park. Community memorial pages later marked Fitch’s death and the location, noting that he had been fatally shot while outside, a detail that underscored the brazen nature of the ambush and the vulnerability of those simply sharing a corner or passing the time on the block.
Detectives from the Chicago Police Department’s Area 4 unit opened a homicide investigation. As reported that day, no arrests had been made and no suspects were in custody, with authorities seeking leads on the gray vehicle and the four assailants who fled after the volley of gunfire.
