In the pre-dawn hours of a Saturday in August, a chain of events began that would end in the death of 26-year-old Jamar Douglas. The incident took place near the Monterey community in Owen County, Kentucky. Responding to a call around 2:00 a.m., Kentucky State Police troopers discovered Douglas, a resident of Louisville, unconscious and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was immediately airlifted to the University of Kentucky Hospital for treatment of what were described as life-threatening injuries.
Despite medical efforts, Jamar Douglas succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 1:11 a.m. the following day. The preliminary investigation pointed to 52-year-old Gary Bullion of Ghent, Kentucky, as the individual who had shot Douglas. In a surprising turn, it was revealed that Bullion himself had called 911 to report the shooting just before 2:30 a.m., claiming he had acted in self-defense. Bullion informed the dispatcher that he had met Douglas online, picked him up from an unknown location, and brought him to his residence on Old Frankfort Pike.
According to Bullion's account to the 911 dispatcher, an argument erupted between the two men, during which Douglas allegedly struck him. Bullion claimed he fired a warning shot before ultimately shooting Douglas in the face. At the scene, investigators discovered a pistol, as well as marijuana, methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia. Following the incident, Bullion was taken into custody. He declined to answer questions from investigators and instead requested a lawyer.
Gary Bullion was arrested and lodged at the Carroll County Detention Center. Initially facing an attempted murder charge, the charge was upgraded to murder following Douglas's death. In addition to the murder charge, Bullion also faces several drug-related offenses, including first-degree possession of a controlled substance possession of marijuana, and buying or possessing drug paraphernalia. The investigation into the death of Jamar Douglas remains ongoing by the Kentucky State Police.
