On the evening of July 8, 2025, 19-year-old Tristan Tomak Trevino, a Hispanic/Latino male, traveled to the Haven Apartments in Hobart, Indiana, for what would be a fatal encounter. At approximately 5:07 p.m., Hobart Police were dispatched to the 300 block of Ruta Drive following reports of a disturbance involving a firearm. Callers informed dispatch that at least four males were involved, and one was seen with a gun, with updates of shots fired and a man down following shortly after.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered a grim scene. Tristan Tomak Trevino was found slumped over an apartment landing railing and was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. Nearby, an 18-year-old male from Hobart was on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head, but he was still alive.
The investigation into the shooting revealed the incident stemmed from a prearranged marijuana sale. Trevino had planned to sell marijuana to the 18-year-old, who had arrived with two companions: 17-year-old Marquis Bonaparte and 18-year-old Jordan Carl Meekins. Investigators determined that the trio had no intention of paying for the drugs and had planned to use counterfeit money, escalating the drug deal into a robbery. All individuals involved were armed, and a confrontation ensued. During the struggle, Trevino shot the 18-year-old buyer, and in response, Meekins shot Trevino from behind.
In the weeks that followed, the investigation led to arrests. On July 17, charges were filed against Jordan Carl Meekins for murder and murder in the perpetration of a robbery. He was later taken into custody on August 13 in Gary by the U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Fugitive Task Force, with assistance from Hobart Police. The investigation continued, leading to a second arrest in September. Prosecutors charged 17-year-old Marquis Bonaparte on September 5 with murder, murder in the perpetration of a robbery, and robbery. Authorities indicated that the inquiry remained active and that more arrests could be forthcoming.
