In the quiet town of Glenwood, Iowa, a dispute between neighbors culminated in a tragic series of events on the evening of August 6, 2025. Brandon Oman, a 38-year-old White male, was fatally shot outside a residence in the 400 block of North Grove Street. The incident, which unfolded around 7:30 p.m., also claimed the life of his 35-year-old wife, Stevie Oman.
That evening, the Mills County Emergency Communication Center was inundated with calls reporting a shooting. When officers from the Glenwood Police Department, Mills County Sheriff's Office, and the Iowa State Patrol arrived at the scene, they discovered a house at 405 Grove Street engulfed in flames and two adults with gunshot wounds outside. Brandon Oman was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, Stevie, was critically injured and transported to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation quickly identified their neighbor, 71-year-old Dennis Burnell, as the person responsible for the deaths. Preliminary findings suggest that the shooting stemmed from an ongoing interpersonal dispute between Burnell and the Omans. As law enforcement arrived, Burnell was taken into custody as he exited his burning home. He had sustained extensive and critical burn injuries during the incident.
Burnell was transported to the Kansas University Medical Center Burn Unit for treatment. However, two days later, on August 8, 2025, authorities were informed that he had died from his injuries. An autopsy for Burnell was planned. With the death of the sole suspect, the case concluded, leaving a community to grapple with the sudden and violent loss of the young couple.
