In the early morning hours of August 14, 2025, the life of 22-year-old Jontavis D. Pearson Jr., a male resident of East Chicago, Indiana, was tragically cut short. Responding to reports of gunfire at approximately 7:00 AM, officers from the East Chicago Police Department arrived at an apartment building located at 3612 Superior Court. Inside, on the second floor, they discovered Pearson unresponsive, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was quickly transported to St.
Catherine Hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at 7:53 a.m. An autopsy later confirmed that Pearson died from gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.
The scene of the shooting told a story of a violent encounter. Investigators found that the door to the apartment where Pearson was found had approximately 11 bullet holes, and numerous shell casings were recovered from inside the unit. The violence was not contained to just one apartment, as a neighboring unit also sustained bullet damage. In the immediate aftermath of the discovery, a juvenile person of interest was taken into custody but was later released as the investigation continued. The case was taken up by the Lake County Prosecutor's Homicide Task Force, who worked alongside the East Chicago Police Department to piece together the events that led to Pearson's death.
After a thorough investigation, an arrest warrant was issued on September 11, 2025. On September 19, a juvenile suspect was taken into custody without incident. The juvenile was subsequently charged with reckless homicide, five counts of criminal recklessness, and dangerous possession of a firearm by a juvenile. Following the arrest, the suspect was transported to the Lake County Juvenile Center.
